The leader of a fourth-generation Hoosier family business believes innovation, patience and attention to customers are the keys to the company's longevity. Indianapolis-based N.K. Hurst Co. is marking 75 years in business. President Rick Hurst says beans remain at the core of the operation, but the company is also involved in sun tan lotion packaging and dry soup mixes. During an appearance on Inside INdiana Business Television, Hurst says educating a younger generation about the cost-effectiveness of cooking from scratch will be essential to the company's future.

IBM Case Heads to Appeals Court

The Indiana Court of Appeals is slated to hear arguments today in the case involving the state and IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM). Indiana is appealing a lower court ruling ordering it to pay the company tens-of-millions of dollars following a failed welfare system privatization deal. Both sides will have 45 minutes to make their arguments.

Northeast Indiana Touts Income Growth

The Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership says personal income in the region increased $1.2 billion in 2012, compared to the previous year. The organization says U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis numbers show northeast Indiana is outpacing the nation in income growth.

Trust Donates Plane to Ivy Tech

A Boeing 737 airplane has been donated to Ivy Tech Community College. The gift from the Popovich Family Trust, valued at nearly $1.4 million, will be used by students at the school's Emergency Response Training Lab, which recently opened at the Gary/Chicago International Airport.

Indiana University Health Arnett in Lafayette says its community impact in 2012 topped $56 million. The health provider says the total includes more than $23 million in free or reduced-cost care.

The state's orthopedics initiative, OrthoWorx, says it has secured more than $6.5 million to support educational and charitable initiatives. That includes more than $1.2 million in pledges, matched by Lilly Endowment Inc. The organization also provided a $4 million grant to the OrthoWorx Capital Foundation.

Two charter school applications have been approved by the Indianapolis Charter School Board. Indiana Math and Science Academy West, currently chartered by Ball State University, will become a Mayor Sponsored Charter School and Founders Classical Academy is expected to begin classes next fall.
