Highlander Hybrid Debuts in L.A.

High Hopes For Princeton-Produced Vehicle

A new Indiana-made vehicle is hitting the global spotlight this week at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana Inc. is expecting strong demand for the 2014 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which will be made in Princeton. Production is set to ramp up in December, with the vehicle available in dealerships in February. The automaker has added approximately 600 jobs in Princeton as part of a more than $400 million investment announced in 2012.

State to Open Kokomo Bypass

A ribbon cutting is set for next week to open a new $155 million section of U.S. 31 in Howard County. The long-awaited 13-mile bypass around Kokomo includes six new interchanges and is an alternative to old U.S. 31, which has 15 intersections and traffic signals.

The State Budget Committee has approved more than $266 million in funding requests. The nearly two dozen projects include university renovations, prison improvements and hospital upgrades.

Indianapolis-based Hahn Systems LLC continues to grow with the acquisition of ECS Fasteners LLC in Westport. The company says it intends to maintain employment levels and operations in Decatur County and fold the ECS product line into its Fuzion Fasteners brand.

Concerns about a federal budget deadline and the rocky rollout of the Affordable Care Act appear to be impacting the Leading Index for Indiana. Indiana Business Research center Director of Economic Analysis Tim Slaper says the index is unchanged this month as policymakers in Washington focus on problems with the health care law while facing a January 15 budget deadline.
